NOWHERE-LAND

One Wish

     Jasper turned to the bristly sailor who stood in the center of the deck, expertly coiling a rope in his muscular hands. "Is it true that if you steal a mermaid's girdle, she must grant you
a wish?"
     The sailor shrugged. "'S possible. I've been up `n' down this spot dozens o' times an' not a hint o' a woman or even half o' one."
     "But Square Cut Bay is famed for mermaids throughout the world! Half my reason for taking this route around Calithwain instead of the shorter overland trip was to feast on their beauty with my own eyes. And maybe," Jasper added, nervously licking his lips, "just maybe have a wish granted to me as well."
     A cluster of sailors who'd apparently been listening in, burst into hearty gales of laughter.
     Jasper glared at them. "You may think I've no sense, wearing the robes of a scholar instead of your rags or a soldier's armor, but I know what I've read. I'm not big or strong but I'm wise. Calithwain is different; everyone knows magic abounds here. There are ways to steal a mermaid's girdle, and then you can just go about begging for jobs if my wish is to own all the merchant ships in the country."
     "Or you could wish for the mermaid to marry you," a sailor pointed out. Jasper found himself grinning triumphantly. Finally they were taking him seriously.
     "Aye, I could. Or court any girl on the land with the treasure I'll win."

     "Of course, she'll have a time walkin' up the aisle with her tail flopping about," the sailor finished. Jasper stalked to the rail, staring out into the black, murky ocean. The moon's reflection on the waves gleamed just like a piece of silver. Jasper would be seeing silver pieces that large and more once he found the mermaid he searched for.
All of his books said that this was the place. For all he knew, a mermaid might be swimming under the boat even as he stood there. Wouldn't that surprise the men who had moved on to even stupider jokes now, such as how many mermaids it took to light a candle.

     The next day, the ship stopped to take on water and supplies at Fisher's Village. Jasper wandered away, after making certain that the ship wouldn't leave until sunrise the next morning. Fascination with mermaids or no, he had a job waiting for him cataloging books in Lotorinum, and couldn't delay it only to search for an elusive and possibly mythical mermaid.
     As he walked along the pier, thinking thoughts of mermaids and wishes, not to mention the arrogant sailors, he heard a splash off in the distance. Probably a fish. Yet he moved closer to the pier's edge, staring into the mists hard enough to part them and reveal his elusive quarry.

     After a moment, Jasper stepped back. It had been a fish after all. He resumed his walk, deciding to stroll into the inn and have some food that hadn't been rotting in a barrel for weeks before consumption. There was another splash now, closer to the pier. But there was hardly any point to straining his eyes looking for another--
     A feminine giggle cut through the soft murmur of the waves and Jasper's head dropped like a load of rocks. There, beside the pier, a lovely head bobbed above the level of the water.
Soft, green-gold ringlets, blue eyes deep and wide enough to drown in. Her grin seemed warm and amused, lips parted slightly to display even, white teeth. Her skin was a warm, honey brown that glistened damply in the sunlight. All he could see was her head and bare shoulders but Jasper knew, with all his heart and soul, that this was no village maid out for a swim. A living, genuine mermaid floated beside the very pier that he stood on.
     "Hello," she said, giving him an artful smile that made his heart skip a beat. She was breathtaking, no question of that. Jasper regretted that he looked like a tall, brown-haired
beanpole in his old fashioned robes. "

Old Mother Hubbard

Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard
To get her poor doggie a bone,

But when she got there, the cupboard was bare,

She went to the baker's to buy him some bread,
But when she came back, the poor doggie was dead.

She went to the joiner's, to buy him a coffin,
But when she came back, the poor doggie was laughin'.

But when she came back, he was smoking a pipe.

She went to the alehouse, to get him some beer,
But when she came back, he was sat in her chair.

She went to the tavern, for wine white and red,
But when she came back, doggie stood on his head.

But when she came back, he was feeding the cat.

She went to the barber's, to buy him a wig,
But when she came back, he was dancing a jig.

She went to the fruiterer's, to buy him some fruit,
But when she came back , he was playing the flute.

She went to the tailor's to buy him a coat,
But when she came back he was riding a goat.

She went to the cobbler's to buy him some shoes,
But when she came back he was reading the news.

She went to the seamstress to buy him some linen,
But when she came back the doggie was spinning.

But when she came back he was dressed in his clothes.

THE RAINBOW,

I think most of us know what a rainbow is, if not we shall find out later. But does anyone know where the "Rainbow Ends"

       Well if you listen to the scientists they will tell you that the rainbow that we see in the sky, is made by tiny particles of water trapped in the atmosphere, which, when the sunlight shines through them, creates the shape of a bow across the sky.

The Story of the Man that went out Shooting

This is the man that shoots the hares;
This is the coat he always wears:
With game-bag, powder-horn, and gun
He's going out to have some fun.

The hare sits snug in leaves and grass,
And laughs to see the green man pass,

He finds it hard, without a pair
Of spectacles, to shoot the hare.

Now, as the sun grew very hot,
And he a heavy gun had got,

He lay down underneath a tree
And went to sleep, as you may see.

And, while he slept like any top,
The little hare came, hop, hop, hop,

Took gun and spectacles, and then
On her hind legs went off again.

The green man wakes and sees her place
The spectacles upon her face;
And now she's trying all she can
To shoot the sleepy, green-coat man.

He cries and screams and runs away;
The hare runs after him all day
And hears him call out everywhere:
"Help! Fire! Help! The Hare! The Hare!"

At last he stumbled at the well,
Head over ears, and in he fell.
The hare stopped short, took aim and, hark!
Bang went the gun-she missed her mark!

The poor man's wife was drinking up
Her coffee in her coffee-cup;
The gun shot cup and saucer through;
"Oh dear!" cried she; "what shall I do?"

There lived close by the cottage there

The coffee fell and burned her nose.

Oh dear I don't trim very well do I, oops. I will have to move my scanner to
an easier place to work with. It is so-o-o squint!

NORTH WIND IN OCTOBER

In the golden glade the chestnutsare fallen all ;
From the sered boughs of the oak the acorns fall :
The beech scatters her ruddy fire ;
The lime has stripped to the cold,
And standeth naked above her yellow attire
The larch thinneth her spire
To lay the ways of the wood with cloth of gold.

JACK SPRAT AND HIS WIFE
Jack Sprat and his wife, we have all read the little verse

Jack Sprat could eat no fat,
his wife could eat no lean,
And so between them both
they licked the platter clean.

Well now I have a little bit more to tell you about Jack Sprat and his wife, get your OJ and your PJ's then. when. you are sitting comfortable, I'll begin.

Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean,
And so between them both, they licked the platter clean.

Jack ate all the lean, Joan ate all the fat,
The bone they both picked clean then gave it to the cat.

When Jack Sprat was young he dressed very smart,
He courted Joan Cole, and soon gained her heart.

In his fine leather doublet and an old greasy hat,
Oh, what a smart fellow was little Jack Sprat.

Joan Cole had a hole in her petticoat,
Jack Sprat, for a patch to Joan Cole gave a groat.

Jack Sprat bought a cow, his Joan for to please,
For Joan she could make both butter and cheese.

Or pancakes or puddings, without any fat;
A notable housewife was little Joan Sprat.

Joan Sprat went to brewing a barrel of ale,
She put in some hops that it might not turn stale.

But as for the malt, she forgot to put that;
"This is brave, sober liquor," said little Jack Sprat.

Jack Sprat went to market, and bought him a mare,
She was lame in three legs, and as blind as could stare.

Her ribs were bare, for the mare had no fat;
"She looks like a racer." Said little Jack Sprat.

Jack and Joan went abroad, Puss took care of the house;
She caught a large rat and a very small mouse.

She caught a small mouse and a very large rat.
"You're an excellent hunter," said little Jack Sprat.

Now I've told you the story of little Jack Sprat,
And little Joan Cole and a poor one-eared cat.

Now Jack loved his Joan, and good things he taught her.
She gave him a son, and then, after, a daughter.

Now Jack has got rich and has plenty of pelf,
If you know any more you may tell it yourself.

Well no doubt I could but me oh my I think I should have you all fast asleep
instead of popping down a bit to sing some songs.

Cymau, That will do, I am Welsh . I live in Wales. I have a website which has so many Welsh related Poetical works and stories on it. And that is just one site, there are four altogether.
And I have my web sites translated into many different languages, not by me, but by all the people who appreciate my hard work.
Then I type "THE WAR SONG OF DINAS FAWR", (to see if anyone has recorded it,) into my web browser and find your site. And what am I met with, no place to sign in or register. No way of getting in. Then I realise "ah it is all in Welsh, they can't want the non Welsh here. " AGORED," is one of the adverts, it means OPEN in Welsh. And low and behold here I am, and Here I shall go. I am disgusted with you and this whole blog site you advertise on. You wonder why people still think we are backwards.... you sir, set a fine example. I am sad to say that maybe people still feel that way. Thank you, but no thank you . I do not need to down load a WELSH Language dictionary ont how to speak my own language, but I do recognise that there are many, many people who love the Welsh Language and Wales and they don't have to speak the language or even be Welsh to appreciate my beautiful country.

SELIGOR'S CASTLE

THE FIRST AXE

    Outside the cave the world was a blaze of white and green. From where he was sat in the shadow of the over-hanging rock Mo-ha could see a brilliant green and yellow lizard flashing out and in among the flints and stones that lay some little distance from the cave.
It was midday, and the Sun burned high up in the heavens, pouring heat upon the Earth with a fierceness that drove all living things to seek shelter in the shadow of rock or tree. It was the early days of the world, when men lived in caves and trees, before speech as it is now known to us had been invented, and there were no adjectives and adverbs to worry the brains of little boys and girls.
Speech at this time consisted almost entirely of nouns, names of things and people, so that when Mo-ha said "Food" he really meant "Is my dinner ready please?" so you see the people then used one word instead of many, after all that's what we do when we text today. You would probably have wondered at Mo-ha and his look, for although he was almost twelve he was the size of a nine year old, he was covered in short, fine hair, the face, hands, and inside of the arms being the only parts of his body entirely free; his eyes were smal, deeply sunk and set close together; his nose was flat and broad, with only the merest suggestion of a bridge; his ears large and slightly pointed at the top. But, so small Mo-ha was much stronger than one would think to look at his thin legs and arms. He could leap farther and run faster than most men can nowadays. He could climb and run from tree to tree through the grest forests that existed then almost as fast you or I could walk along a country road. He could hang from his toes from the branch of a tree for ages and shin up the face of a rock like a lightening flash.
    Behind Mo-ha, half asleep and half awake, lay Nee-na , Mo-ha's little sister, a year younger than Mo-ha himself. From time to time her eyes, which were large and very intelligent in their expression, would open and shut like a cat's, as she watched her brother. There was no change, however, in Mo-ha's attitude, and at last Nee-na raised herself from the cool earth and placed her hand upon the boy's shoulder, and though she used only one word, she was probably asking him what he was thinking?
Mo-ha made no answer, but, picking up a straight, sharp stick that lay close beside him, he flung it at the lizard, and Nee-na laughed and rubbed her hairy little toes together with delight.   The Sun had fallen down the sky for some time - and it would be about four o'clock in the afternoon when Mo-ha accompanied by Nee-na, left the coolness of the cave and walked to where the stick he had thrown still remained, apparently stuck in the ground.
When Mo-ha lifted the stick he was greatly surprised to see a stone, a flint sticking on the end of it. Somehow the end of the stick had opened and the stone was wedged in the top, at that moment Mo-ha hadn't realised what he had made, quite by accident but, then, that is quite how many a tool has come into being. Immediately Mo-ha picked it up and without any more ado he swung it round his head a few times and bought it down, hard on a fallen log. They both jumped as the flint hit the log and cut into it like it was a rotten.
      Mo-ha was delighted with his new, hmm! axe, and carried it proudly as he and Nee-na made there way to the spring to drink some water before settling down to sleep for the night hours.
    They were half way to the spring, Mo-ha slightly in front when Nee-na, who sensed danger quicker than her brother stopped suddenly with a warning hiss. A heavy musk like odour met Mo-ha's nostrils seconds later and quickly he sprang to the nearest tree and climbed hastily up to the topper-most branches, he moved that fast, it seemed he was being hauled up by a hidden rope. Nee- na was at the same time reaching the upper-most branches of a mighty palm like tree, which she was closest too when sensing danger.

   The next moment the Striped One, old Sabre-tooth the tiger, broke through the dense, fern-like underbrush, and stood immediately below the tree in which Nee-na cowered in complete terror.

A PAGE FULL OF TINY NURSERY RHYMES
FOR THE VERY YOUNG

Millions of massive raindrops have fallen on the ground;
They have danced on the house-tops, They have hiden in the ground.
They were liquid-like musicians, with anything for keys,
Beating tunes upon the windows, keeping time upon the trees.

You shall have an apple,
   You shall have a plum,
You shall have a rattle-basket,
   When your dad comes home.

A man in the wilderness asked of me
How many strawberries grew in the sea.
I answered him as I thought good:
As many as red herrings grow in the wood.

See-saw, sacaradown,
Which is the way to London Town?
One foot up, and one foot down,
That is the way to London Town.
King Pippin built a fine new hall
    Pastry and pie-crust were the wall;
Windows made of black pudding and white
    Slates were pancakes - you ne'er saw the like.

When little Fred was called to bed he always acted right;
He kissed Mamma, and then Papa, and wished them both good-night.
He made no noise, like naughty boys, but gently went upstairs
Directly when he was sent, and always said his prayes;
